One of my favorite songs right now is “Sis Draper” co-written by Guy Clark and Shawn Camp. I first heard the song while running errands with my husband, listening to the radio, and it blew me away. Why? First, I grew up in Arkansas, so any song set in Arkansas grabs my attention. Second, it has a catchy tune that causes me to pound the dashboard and tap my foot. And third, it tells a story that takes me back to my early years in Arkansas.
“Sis Draper” was originally released by Guy Clark, but this version is from The Ghost of Sis Draper CD by Shawn Camp, who grew up in Perryville, AR. He encountered the real Sis Draper, a revered fiddle player, as a child, and the CD has an array of songs he and Clark wrote based on people Camp encountered while growing up.

There is also a live, guitars only, rendition of the song where Shawn Camp talks about the real Sis Draper and how the song came about. It was posted by the Aransas County Historical Society and is well worth the watch.
